The Nottingham Council of Mosques (NCM) was formed in 2018 after detailed consultation with the Mosques and Muslim leaders in Nottinghamshire. It was formed to provide the nearest Islamic centre to the Muslim population in the UK.
There was a strong consensus that the interests of Muslims in our City should be represented by a strong partnership of Mosques – a structure which exists in many Cities with sizable Muslim ethnicities in UK.
Muslims make up approximately 9% of the Nottingham population. The Muslim population of Nottingham is diverse and belongs to various ethnicities (including Pakistani, Arab, African, Indian, and Bangladeshi). In recent years many brothers and sisters embraced the religion of Islam.
The NCM is an umbrella organisation representing Mosques and Muslim religious teaching centres spreading the knowledge of Islam. NCM aims to serve the interests of the Muslims of Nottinghamshire, providing a unified approach to respond to the hopes, aspirations and needs of all Muslims.
In partnership with its affiliated Mosques, organisations, and public/civil agencies, NCM has endeavoured to place the individual and collective needs of the Muslim community firmly on the agenda of all service providers in Nottinghamshire.
The scope of NCM activities covers the varied areas of education, employment, health, community safety, media, quality assurance, and the needs of young people and families.
Through our work, we seek to promote an awareness of the religion of Islam amongst all ethnicities in UK, as well as foster understanding, better community relations and community cohesion. There is an appreciation that the issues of common concern within the community must be tackled collectively through a partnership of faith organisations.
The NCM, in 2020 established five sub-groups in responding to issues identified by members as being important and demanding actions within our communities. The Sub-groups are:
The NCM Management Committee is made up of 6 trustees and advisors who attend monthly Management Committee meetings.
Each member Mosque nominates two representatives, to participate in elections and key decision-making at the Annual General Meeting.
